Therapy & Support for Families and Professionals

The journey to parenthood can bring a mix of joy and challenge, especially when it involves complications or neonatal care. At The Neonatal Practice, we offer specialist psychological therapy for parents, babies, and professionals navigating these experiences.

Our sessions provide a safe, understanding space to explore the emotional impact of hospital stays, complex pregnancies, loss, or adjustment after coming home. We also support the wellbeing of healthcare professionals working in these demanding settings.

Therapy is available in person in Oxfordshire or online, delivered by highly experienced Clinical Psychologists specialising in neonatal and perinatal care.

Who we support

We support parents, families, and professionals whose lives are touched by neonatal or perinatal care.

This includes:

  • Parents and carers experiencing trauma, anxiety, or low mood during or after a neonatal stay

  • Expectant parents facing complex pregnancies or uncertainty about their baby’s health

  • Families adjusting to life at home after hospital discharge

  • Parents coping with loss or bereavement

  • Healthcare professionals working within neonatal and perinatal settings

What we offer

At The Neonatal Practice, we use a range of evidence-based approaches to support emotional wellbeing, recovery, and connection throughout the neonatal and perinatal journey.

We draw on a number of different therapeutic models depending on what feels most helpful for you.

These include:

  • Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT) – to help process distressing experiences and reduce the ongoing effects of trauma.

  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) – to build self-kindness and ease feelings of guilt, shame, or self-criticism that often arise after a difficult start.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – to support adjustment, acceptance, and meaning when life feels uncertain or different to how you expected.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – an evidence-based approach that helps the brain process traumatic memories so they feel less raw and overwhelming.

  • Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) – to gently make sense of a series of challenging or prolonged experiences and rebuild a sense of safety.

  • Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) – a nurturing, video-based approach that helps parents notice and build on moments of positive connection with their baby, strengthening confidence and closeness.

Therapy always begins with a collaborative assessment to understand what you’d like support with and what’s most important to you. Together, we develop a flexible plan that draws on both current evidence and your personal experiences, preferences, and values.

Our aim is simple: to create a safe, thoughtful space where you can make sense of what’s happened, find steadier ground, and reconnect with yourself and those around you.
