 We aim to provide teaching, training and consultancy that equips you as an individual, and a team, to work in a psychologically informed way with families and each other.

 

Our training and consultancy services are for neonatal professionals and extend to those working in mental health, health visiting, midwifery, Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnerships (MNVPs) and Allied Health Professionals (AHPs).

Working with parents whose baby has been in neonatal care

1 in 7 babies will spend some time in neonatal care. This introductory course for those working with neonatal families after they have returned home will help you and your team understand the experience and psychological impact of the neonatal journey, the models of care currently adopted on units to mitigate the impact for parents & babies and how you can work thoughtfully and effectively with families after discharge.

 

Designed with Experts by Experience we will explore what matters most to families, explore some of the unique challenges they face and how you can adapt your services to meet their needs.

An Introduction to
Psychologically Informed Neonatal Care

This training aims to provide an introduction to psychologically informed neonatal care, with a particular focus on learning about the compassion mind approach and how we can apply and embed these principles and 
approaches to working with families, teams and systems. This is primarily for neonatal teams.  It includes:

  • What is a psychologically- informed approach?

  • How can we understand the neonatal experience for babies, their families and staff through this lens?

  • What models and approaches can help?

  • How do we reflect this approach in our environments, systems and most importantly our relationships?

Supporting Parents through baby loss in Neonatal Care

Supporting parents around the death of their baby/babies in neonatal care is a hugely rewarding, yet often daunting task. Understanding how to support families through the different situations they face in hospital and in other settings is key, as well as knowing how to help them navigate the loss after their baby has died.  This training aims to equip all staff working with neonatal families (mental health professionals, Midwives, health visitors, neonatal staff, GPs etc) with an understanding of bereavement in the neonatal context, introduces you to ways of working with families in the short and longer term after the death of their baby/babies and how to work creatively and sensitively with beliefs and values. It includes:

  • Understanding the context of death on a neonatal unit

  • Ways to support shared decision making

  • Values- based parenting at the end of life

  • Memory making, rituals, rites of passage and legacy building

  • Supporting siblings and the wider family

  • The impact on intimate/partner relationships

  • Supporting families through key events such as funerals, mortuary visits, and the death itself.

  • Psychological approaches to helping bereaved parents

  • Support for subsequent pregnancies
